Theory Test

Why do we have a Theory Test

Learning to drive is as much about knowing how to be safe on the roads as it is about handling the car.

The Theory Test has been designed to test your ‘reading of the road’. You’ll learn all about road signs and general road etiquette as well as anticipating hazards.

Designed to improve safety: These are the facts: within the first two years of passing your driving test, you’re more vulnerable on today’s busy roads than more experienced drivers. As many as 1 in 5 newly qualified drivers has an accident in the first year, with the highest risk being faced by 17 to 25 year olds.

The Theory Test and the new hazard perception test are designed to boost your skills so that you’re less likely to be involved in an accident. Research shows that just three hours of hazard perception training can significantly reduce the accident rate of an inexperienced driver.

What’s In the Theory Test?

The theory test is a touchscreen based test, and consists of two parts. The first part is a series of multiple choice questions and the second part is a test of your hazard perception skills. It is only the multiple choice part that you can practise on this site.

The multiple choice part consists of 50 multiple choice questions. In the actual test you select your answers by simply touching the screen. You need to touch the box alongside the answer or answers you think are correct. If you change your mind and don’t want that answer to be selected, touch it again. You can then choose another answer. (This on-line version does not use a touch screen).

A question and several answer options will appear on screen and you have to select the correct answer(s) to the question by using the mouse. Some questions may require more than one answer.

There are 50 questions and you have 57 minutes to complete the test. You can navigate between questions and ‘flag’ questions that you want to come back to later in the test.

The pass mark for the multiple choice part of the theory test is 43 out of 50.
